Health – What Can You Do About It?

“Health is not everything, but everything without health is nothing.” I read this phrase a couple of years ago but its impact was so powerful that it has remained etched in my memory.

In Singapore, one recent case to illustrate this phrase was a very rich man who tried to buy a kidney to replace his failed kidney. Unfortunately it was against the law and he was caught and jailed. Fortunately it was for a very short jail term. Also fortunately, somebody “donated” a kidney to him. However, he still has all the usual related health issues like diabetes, high-blood pressure and so on.

Therefore if you neglect to do all that is necessary to maintain your good health you will suffer and regret it later on in life.

Very soon you will be afflicted with one form of impairment, disorder or disability after another. The intensity or frequency or seriousness escalates. Soon it spirals out of control.

You simply have to be mindful of all the necessary precautions and actions to be taken and be disciplined enough to follow them.

Let’s just take three examples.

First take for example the over consumption of salt, or Sodium Chloride. I used to like my food salty, but now I know that it can increase my blood pressure and thus I have drastically reduced my salt intake. The problem is that it is over a period of time before you are pronounced "Hypertensive ", and Hypertension is for Life.

Salt also causes you to retain water, which can cause bloating and make you look fatter, and problems of intestinal and gastric nature. Don’t you think it would be wiser to control the intake of salt from now on?

Secondly what about the often neglected advice to exercise regularly? In times of recession, we might not be able to join a gym membership. However, we could simply put on a comfortable pair of proper running shoes and go for brisk walks or go running at a nearby track or a beautiful park.

What are some tips on running for beginners? The number one rule is to stretch! If you do not stretch properly you will notice pain or you may pull your muscles etc.

Take it easy and target for a 30 minute cardio workout. On your first time warm up for 5 minutes, run for 5 minutes and walk for 20 minutes. Increase your run time until you can run most of the 30 minutes.

The third and final example is to have good dental hygiene. A good advice is to brush your teeth two to three times a day, which means after each meal. This will help you reduce plaque.

It would be better if you could floss your teeth to remove food trapped in between your teeth. All this effort will be well rewarded. You will have fewer fillings and less tooth aches or gum disease in your more advanced age.

You will also maintain a better quality of life or self esteem by preserving speech and eating functions as your teeth will last longer. You can avoid being embarrassed by your bad breath or missing or unsightly teeth

Tonsils -- Do you have to have health problems to take them out?
Hey guys. I was wondering if you HAVE to have tonsillitis or some health problem in order to take them out, like a doctor's " OK" for it. My right tonsil has always been inflamed and bigger than my left. And the most annoyance comes when I get pains and awkward feelings in my throat, when food builds up in them. I always have to remove the food deposits with a couple q tips. I don't enjoy how my breath smells from that if I don't take them out, either. I really would love to have them taken out from all of these things that are just downright annoying. I'm 19, female, and Canadian if that helps.

Anyone know about health weight loss?
One of my several new years resolutions was to lose weight. I'm just a little confused about how to do it safely. Should I cut my calories and exercise and if so how much should my calorie deficit be? What I mean is lets say and this isn't real at all just an example I eat 2500 calories a day but then swim on my swim team for our three hour practice and I end up burning roughly 3500 calories would the deficit of 1000 calories be okay or not? If not should I eat more or exercise less?To the person who mentioned strength training I'm not really sure how to do that. I've never really spent time at a gym and when in school I just did regular P.E. so never used weights weight machines. I don't really want to get super muscular or anything. Is it possible just to do it at home or should I use all of the machines and weights and everything?

Why do people think getting colds means you have bad health?
I'm in top shape because I go to the gym and exercise all the time and take heaps of vitamins I must also have a strong immune system because it never takes me more than 3 days to get rid of a cold plus I have never had the flue not once nor have I ever been ill with anything other than a cold. I just seem to be a target for colds. So all this about I must have a poor diet or I don't exercise or get enough vitamins is wrong so why do people keep saying why don't people realise that some of us are just prone to getting colds ?I'm also 28 years old so I'm not old

Using earphones bad for health?
Recently, I was just playing around with my earphones the common white ones from Apple and I noticed that they repelled each other. This made me wonder if using earphones could screw around with our brain... Other than the obvious loss of hearing when music is played too loud, could usage of earphones be bad for us neurologically?
